Here is another photo from collector Daniel Trujillo. He is purporting this to be yet *another* photo in the long accumulating line of newly "discovered" Billy the Kid photos that are miraculously coming to light as of late.
Hint: In Billy's day (1859-1881) and well beyond, people didn't take photos regularly as they do today where every photo is needlessly considered worthy of note and recollection. In those days, photos were a luxury.
We already have excellent provenance for one photo in particular; the infamous photo everyone has become familiar with: Billy the Kid standing there cockily posing with his beloved Winchester and holstered pistol. Considering people of that time didn't and couldn't take photos every time fancy struck (like we do today), the odds of any *new* photos popping up boasting an image of Billy can only be based on wishful thinking and bullshit. In fact, tremendous odds are Billy only ever had the one photo taken.
Nonetheless, here is the newest hopeful in a long line of hopefuls. Do I or any notable historians believe this photo to be the real deal? Not particularly, though we never rule it out. Doubt abounds in spades, but each of us wouldn’t turn down the opportunity to be afforded solid provenance.
